Today We:
- Had Music.
- Had catch – up time to work on unfinished work.
- Began our story unit by reading the book “I Am A Story.” Students discussed the following questions: What are stories? Why do people tell stories? What are the different ways people can tell stories? What makes a good story? Can a person, place, or thing have a story? Students were then put into partners and assigned a coloured reading bin containing various picture books. Partners chose a story and read it together EEKK (elbow to elbow, knee to knee). We discussed how to partner/buddy read: taking turns reading pages or paragraphs, paying attention and following along while your partner is reading so that you can better understand the story, show respect, and potentially help if someone gets stuck on a word, looking at the pictures because they also tell the story, staying in one spot and not moving around, etc… Tomorrow students will finish reading their books if they have not done so, and complete their first activity in our story unit “What Is The Big Idea Of Your Story.”
- Worked on our Peruvian Postcards. Students completed writing the 5 most important facts / pieces of information they learned about Peru, and wrote them on their good copy postcards. Students have now begun designing the picture part of their postcards to accompany their writing.
- Read our class read aloud “I Want to Go Home,” by Gordon Korman.
- Watched “Math Curse.” The big idea of the story was that “Almost Anything Is a Math Problem.” Students brainstormed different kinds of Math questions they saw in the video, as well as how they use Math in their everyday lives. Students were asked to record in their Math Workbooks at least one Math problem that they face in their life. For example: How long does it take me to get ready for school? How long does it take me to get to the bus?
- Practiced throwing/sliding curling rocks in groups of 4 in Gym.
Student Quotes:

“I liked when my friend shared about his weekend with our class pet Spot.”
“I liked finishing my Pen Pal Letter because I got to type it on the computer.”

“I liked freezing in the Gym when we were playing Toilet Tag.”

Question: What is one way you use Math in your everyday life?
