Multi-coloured PoWer Hour Assignment Slips going home.
Science Experiment – We will be creating miniature landfills in Science. Each student will require one 2 L pop bottle (clear is best, so that the layers are easily visible). If you have extra bottles that you could donate for this experiment, for students who don’t have a bottle, it would be greatly appreciated. Please have bottles to school by Wednesday October 7. Thank-you.
Library Thursday.
Today We:
- Continued to add to our group brainstorm about the Canadian Shield Region. We reviewed the meanings of the words: landform, climate, resources, and vegetation.
- Began discussing decomposers in Science. After watching a short video clip and listening to a song about decomposers, we began creating a class brainstorm about decomposers.

- Had Gym outside to enjoy the beautiful weather.
- Read our class novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh.
- We reviewed yesterday’s visual pattern that involved toothpicks. We discussed various strategies people used to solve the problem. We then worked on solving a few increasing and decreasing number patterns as a group.
- Reviewed the idea that patterns are not just in numbers, but can be found everywhere. Students brainstormed places such as clothing, animals, food, buildings, etc… We then read a few pattern books as a group to introduce our upcoming Math project. We carefully observed where we saw patterns within the pictures of the books. We will continue with this activity tomorrow.
- Participated in self-directed Literacy Stations. Students worked on one of five stations: Poetry Pause, Current Events, Buddy Reading, Word Work, Ipad, and Listening Station. Some students have taken work home to complete.
- Read a book called Personal Space Camp to introduce the Circles Program. Circles program is based on various circles that we have and who belong in these circles. The first circle we have begun talking about is our purple circle. This is our comfort bubble. At school it is about the size of a hula hoop. When we are sitting on the carpet or walking in the hallway no one should be in our purple circles.
Student Quotes:
“I learned energy travels in food chains.”
“I learned the trees are part of the ecosystem.”
“I learned that if we didn’t have decomposers the world would have a lot of garbage.”
“I learned a new song in Science.”
“I learned about new decomposers like starfish and seaweed.”
“I liked the Science clips we watched because the songs were catchy.”
Question: What do decomposers do?
