Today We:
- Set new personal goals for the week.
- Completed a handwriting activity.
- Had Monday Morning Meeting where we got together in partners to share artifacts and stories about our weekends.
- Wrote detailed journal entries.
- Played Fainting Goat Tag in Gym. Students please explain to your parents how to play this game.
- Continued reading “The Tale of Despereaux.” Despereaux has been sent to the smelly, dark dungeon where he has met the human jailer George. George says he will spare Despereaux’s life if he tells him a story.
- Went over our new Rocks and Minerals Science Centers that we will start this week. There are 20 Centers! Students please tell your parents about some of the centers you remember.
- Finished watching the last few minutes of Bill Nye Volcanoes. We also got to see two short Teacher Tube videos about geodes, and the 3 main types of rocks.
- Began discussing addition and subtraction questions that involve large numbers. We reviewed strategies that we have been using that may not work as well for larger numbers, such as sticks and dots, drawing base ten blocks, tallies, etc… These strategies are good, but don’t work well for larger numbers because they are time consuming, and we can make mistakes easily. The algorithm strategy was introduced and reviewed (some parents may know this as borrowing, carrying, or regrouping). Students were walked through 6 adding and subtracting problems ranging in difficulty ex 46 – 29, 844 + 168, 353 – 277, 37 + 22 + 14, etc… We reviewed what was actually happening when we regroup – we are moving tens rods and hundreds flats into smaller pieces. Subtraction rhymes were introduced to help some students remember the steps to subtracting: “More on the top no need to stop.” “More on the floor, go next door and get ten more.” “Numbers the same, zeros your game.”
