Shortly, students will begin their next two Science Units: Testing Materials and Designs in conjunction with Building With A Variety Of Materials. For the months of February, March, and April students will participate in collaborative, hands-on Science activities that will involve designing and building various structures. In order to make these activities a success I am hoping that parents will be able to donate the following items:
- Cardboard
- Styrofoam
- Cardboard and plastic tubes of various sizes
- Jars and Lids
- String, yarn, twine, ribbon, pipe cleaners
- Buttons
- Thread spools
- Fabric
- Plastic bags, zip locks

- Old CD’s
- Boxes of various sizes from food items – crackers, cereal, oatmeal, cookies, etc…
Thank-you in advance!
Today We:
- Set new personal goals for the week.
- Had Ms. Lauf teach us how to build pillars out of paper using tabs, tape, and glue. Students please tell your parents what you learned during this activity.
- Read “I Want To Go Home,” by Gordon Korman.
- Finished our Shirley Hill reflection pages that we started last week; we added details to our sketches, and completed writing our informative letters.
- Practiced our dribbling skills, and played a game called Keep Away in Gym.
- Solved the following Quick Math Problem: I have 31 dogs. I have 18 gorillas. I gave 16 of my dogs away and got 14 new gorillas. I got 341 new dogs but 7 of them ran away. How many dogs do I have now? Students please tell your parents how you solved this problem, and if all of the numbers were important.
- Had Sharing Circle – We were asked whether or not we thought it was good to redo our work/go back and edit even though it might not be fun to do so and why.
- Read the story "Papa's Mechanical Fish." We discussed how this story is related to our new Building Units in Science. The inventor in the story demonstrated perseverance as he went back to alter his design numerous times.
- We practiced 6 quick draws to prepare for our upcoming week at City Hall School in April. We focused on looking for shapes, and how to shade certain sections to show depth and add detail. Some of even challenged ourselves to stand and hold our sketchbooks, as we may not always have a place to sit downtown.
Student Quotes:
“I liked doing Social because we got to practice doing quick draws for when we go to City Hall School.”
“I liked Gym because we got to play Keep Away.”
“I liked doing our Shirley Hill Reflection because we got to sketch two pictures and I really like drawing.”
“I liked having Choir at lunch today because we got to sing all of our songs.”
“I liked doing our reflections because I started my second paragraph.”
Question: What is one thing you learned at school today?
